The second volume in the FARMS series, The Hor Book of Breathings is a complete publication of three of the remaining fragments of the Joseph Smith Papyri. These ancient hieroglyphics were part of a larger collection of scrolls, some of which were first translated as the Book of Abraham by the Mormon prophet Joseph Smith in the mids/5(3).

In Abraham Rhodes was sworn in as constable of St. Mary's Hundred, the area around the first colonial capital of Maryland, and later served as head of the Common Councilmen of St. Mary's City. He appears many times in the extant records of Maryland as an estate appraiser and witness to documents.

The original source of the Book of Abraham has been found, and it has nothing to do with Abraham. The "translation" is a fraud. The Egyptian drawings (facsimiles) that Joseph partially interpreted in the Book of Abraham were interpreted incorrectly, showing that he had no prophetic gift and was a fraud.

FairMormon is acknowledging that the Prophet Joseph Smith considered the 1 st century AD scroll of Horus to be the source of the Book of Abraham.

The evidence is conclusive that Joseph used the 1 st century AD scroll of Horus, which we now possess, in translating the Book of Abraham.

We can now read Egyptian. While many orthodox, doubting, and post-Mormons have heard the Abraham Rhodes. book of pseudo-Egyptologists/Book of Abraham apologists like John Gee, Kerry Muhlestein, and Michael Abraham Rhodes. book. Rhodes, few Mormons or post-Mormons have actually heard the opinions of a legitimate, world-class Egyptologist about the historicity and credibility of the Book of Abraham.

The book of Abraham largely follows the biblical narrative but adds important information regarding Abraham’s life and teachings. The book of Abraham was first published in and was canonized as part of the Pearl of Great Price in The book originated with Egyptian papyri that Joseph Smith translated beginning in Michael D.

Rhodes published his ninety-seven-page book, The Hor Book of Breathings: A Translation and Commentary, which was the second volume in the series entitled Studies in the Book of Abraham by the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies (FARMS) at Brigham Young University.

For these and other examples, see Peterson, “News from Antiquity”; Hugh Nibley, An Approach to the Book of Abraham (Salt Lake City and Provo, UT: Deseret Book and Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies, ), –78; Nibley and Rhodes, One Eternal Round, –45; John Gee, “A New Look at the Conception of the Human Being.

Hauglid surprisingly cites Michael Rhodes, John Gee, William J. Hamblin, Paul Y. Hoskisson and Daniel C. Peterson as credible sources for supporting the authenticity of the Book of Abraham.

These men are not credible sources. Explores the Joseph Smith papyrus and demonstrates that Joseph Smith's claim that he had translated the Book of Abraham from it was a fabrication. Disproves LDS claims that Joseph Smith received the Book of Abraham through revelation and proves that Joseph Smith's source for his translation was a pagan Egyptian text, the Book of Breathings.

The article Origin of the Book of Abraham recounts the discovery and purchase of the Joseph Smith Papyri and events leading up to the publication of the Book of Abraham itself.

Michael D. Rhodes Facsimile 1, printed in the Times and Seasons, 1 March One of the most difficult aspects of teaching the book of Abraham is dealing with the three facsimiles found there. Critics of the Church have raised numerous questions about them and the associated papyri, and students often ask about these criticisms.

the Book of Abraham, Deseret Book Company, Rhodes uses Peterson's work as his main source for detailing this history. To give a feel for the importance of the papyri and the Rhodes volume I will quote from two letters written by the leaders of.

As recently as the July issue of the Ensign (p. 51), Michael D. Rhodes was still suggesting it, and the Encyclopedia of Mormonism, published insimilarly implies that the papyri recovered in did not include the Egyptian source document from which Joseph Smith produced the Book of Abraham.

The recent web posting on the Book of Abraham by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (hereafter the LDS church) represents new reflection on a document whose authenticity as verifiable history is now officially acknowledged to be in serious dispute.

1 Thus the position paper concludes with a concession by noting (unnamed) modern scholarly opposition to the Book of Abraham.

Rhodes’s lecture “The Book of Abraham: Dealing with the Critics” (also available as a YouTube video) is a critique of IRR’s video, purporting to show “the basic flaws in the scholarship” of the video.

One of the most difficult aspects of teaching the book of Abraham is dealing with the three facsimiles found there.

Critics of the Church have raised numerous questions about them and the associated papyri. The Apostolic Constitutions mention apocryphal writings under the names of the three patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob); Epiphanius says that the Sethians used an Apocalypse of Abraham which was "full of all manner of wickedness," and Origen gives something like a quotation from an Abrahamic book, in these terms (on Luke, Hom.
