Water-soluble polymers commonly used in the oil field are reviewed. The properties of guar, guar derivatives, cellulose derivatives, xanthan gum, locust bean gum, starches, and synthetic polymers, especially polyacrylamides, are discussed and related to chemical structures of the polymers.

      Water-soluble polymer encompasses a wide range of synthetic, semisynthetic, and natural materials. All are soluble in water. It perform various useful functions such as thickening, gelling, flocculating, rheology modifying and stabilizing. Food processing, water treatment, paper, enhanced oil and natural gas recovery, mineral processing.
